Flowerbowl 2008 in Vancouver, BC ( June 7-8): A huge success

The Okanagan Men's and Women's Ultimate teams (Kelowna, BC) both finished undefeated in the Open and Women's divisions. Congratulations to the Sofa Kings and to Bushfire!

Competition was elevated as teams prepared themselves for the upcoming Nationals and the WFDF Worlds later in the year. There were spirited games as well as brawls. Hmmm, is the UPA going to step up to this one???

Open Elite
Furious over Tonka Truck (TFP men): 15-8.
Tonka hung in well against Furious in the round robin, losing 15-12, and they took it 17-16 in the semi-final vs. Blackfish, while Furious removed Voodoo in the other semi.

Women's Elite
Fury over Riot: 15-10.
Fury beat Traffic and Riot took Great Britain in the semis.

the Huddle posts

Here's a new site with a great philosophy and ambitious goals. It is a conduit to publish ideas from the best Ultimate players. According to the author, the "goal at the Huddle is to publicize the best strategic knowledge available from the Ultimate community. The only way to do this is to go to the source; the players and coaches that have had success implementing and teaching their strategies for top club and college teams. The resulting panel of authors has varied backgrounds, locations, team histories and successes, but they all share one thing in common: their teams win games."

New Blog Site

We've switched to Google's Blogger. All SotG blogs for http://www.sotg.ca/ will now be posted on Blogger. Blogs will still be used to announce updates to the site, newsworthy items pertaining to Ultimate, and SotG site issues.

Note: The SotG forum (TalkFest) is currently off-line due to a controversy with BigDaddy. BigDaddy had a computer glitch that affected the forum and refuses to acknowledge their responsibility. Tourneys

I'm working on the tournaments page, but much of the finer detail will take a while to complete. Dates need to be confirmed. The scope has to be finalized. I'd like to get a more complete picture of the BC Tournaments.

The SCHWAG page now has discs, flashlights, and other gear for sale. Now, you can also browse our links page for DVDs and books in US and Canadian currencies.

Tips, Games, Cheers

We've been busy this week, with Kelowna's Sunflicker tournament just around the corner. We added more mini-games and cheers. The FAQ and TIPS pages are more complete too. In fact, the Academy of Ultimate (tips, strategies, drills, and workouts) is starting to take shape.

Books & DVDs

We have updated our recommended list of Flying Disc-Related books and DVD's. We have partnered with Amazon.com (and Amazon.ca) to provide you with on-line sales links.

We apologize. Once again we need to delay the opening of our social messaging forum due to server obstacles. Our new target date is July 2008.

Health and Fitness

This page discusses physical fitness, nutrition, health as it pertains to injuries and their treatment, sports psychology, and more. Numerous on-line articles are referenced.

Drills, drills and more drills

The drills page is essentially complete. Basic skills are covered. Under the Practices heading, we added a Drills To Improve Throwing And Catching section. In the future, we'll port many of the concepts directly to this site to reduce the number of "clicks" and improve site stability.

New Ultimate Drills Page

Yes, drills have arrived! We added the Sandahl drill, the reset drill, and another warm-up drill.

Housekeeping Items

Several projects are nearing completion. The home page's containers for blogs, news, and tournaments will pull data from other appropriate pages. This is alsmost operational. The jargon database (glossary) is nearly done, but depends on the capability of our hosting service. A flash add-on to the home page is underway. These elements will appear shortly. Unfortunely, that means that the forum may be delayed a bit more.

Photo Gallery

I've been experimenting with the latest LightBox script to create an album of UPA tournament photos. LightBox has a great appearance and is easy for visitors to use. The link to our gallery is on the SotG home page.

Calls and Communication

Every team sport demands constant communication among its players. Ultimate is no different. Our Communication & Game Calls page organizes the common types of communication required by the game rules and by standard practice into understandable units.

The Art of Heckling

Heckling is not taunting. According to the UPA, "Ultimate has a long tradition of good-natured heckling. Heckles are friendly barbs, typically from non-playing spectators." This newly added page gives examples of heckles that add good-natured fun to the game.

How To Play

The page on How To Play Ultimate is coming along. When complete, it'll cover basic gameplay, rules, the spirit of the game, a FAQ, a brief history of Ultimate, and various types of communication (player and sideline).

Cheers, Songs & Haikus, mini-Games

The Cheers, Songs & Haikus are on-line in the Fun&Games section. The mini-games are good post-game fun too. Do you have any other good examples?

UPA Coaching Course

Well, I'm off to Seattle to take the Level One Coaching course. Updates to the site will have to wait. We did clean up some bugs in the puzzles today and started the Variant Games page. You can click the heading above to go to our home page.

We added other games, such as jigsaw and crossword puzzles, quizzes, Ultimate board game, and video games. Two of the video games include disc golf. Click the "Fun&Games" link.
